Children’s cooking lessons

Why take part in a children’s cookery lesson?
Children's cooking lessons.
A side from having fun and learning a new skill there are a few other skills and abilities that children can develop from attending a Cooking Club. Of course cooking is an important skill for life when going into adulthood, not many of us can survive with beans on toast everyday.

Through tasting, hearing, touching, smelling and seeing, children will be exposed to and identify different foods.

Motor skills – Being actively involved with food will help large and fine motor skills. As well, food preparation enhances eye-hand coordination.

Mathematics – Kids will count, measure and follow recipe directions.

Safety – During food preparation children are taught the importance of safety when dealing with food and utensils.

Social skills – Working with other children will give the kids a sense of sharing and cooperation and an understanding of how to interact with others in groups. They will be able to learn from one another.

Emotional development – As children learn to make something for themselves, they develop a sense of independence, pride and a positive self-image.

Language skills – Food activities provide a rich opportunity to learn the names of foods and utensils. Many food activities can also encourage conversations about food likes, dislikes and experiences children have had with food.

Geography and History – where do foods come from, depending on where they grow and the impact on food depending on the weather of each place. Other countries have different traditions and festivals where food is very importat part of the celebrations. They use special ingredients which they use for their cooking. Different utensils that other countries use for their cooking and why they use them.
They can learn about the different centuries and how cooking has evolved over the centuries. What happened during the wars, what did the victorians use to eat, etc.
