French cooking class Bristol: pastry and classic French dishes at Cooking It in Bishopston

French cooking class Bristol

Classic French cooking at Cooking It in Bishopston. £85 a person, ingredients and kit included, and you eat what you cook.

The Classic French Cuisine Cookery Class is our hands-on French cooking class Bristol customers book at 37 Gloucester Road, Bishopston, Bristol BS7 8AD, on Gloucester Road in north Bristol. You cook classic French dishes, practise the techniques behind them, and then sit down and eat what you made.

Cooking It is an independent cookery school, founded and run by Monica Worsley, and we have been teaching for about ten years. Paul, our head chef, teaches most of our European classes. The class is hands-on, in a group of no more than 12, and costs £85 a person.

What you'll cook

The classic French cuisine class is built around familiar dishes and the technique underneath them. Menu examples are coq au vin, dauphinoise potatoes and crème brûlée, and the menu shifts to fit dietary needs. Along the way you practise French sauces, stocks and knife cuts.

Coq au vin needs a good stock and a sauce built on it, dauphinoise needs even, thin slices, and crème brûlée is a custard technique, so the menu and the technique go together.

Sauces and stocks are the foundation of classic French cooking, and the classic knife cuts are French in origin. The menu gives you a practical way to use them in a French cookery class Bristol evening.

If pastry is what you are after, the Perfect Pastry class (£85, next on Sunday 15 November 2026 at 10:30 am) covers shortcrust, puff and a mix of sweet and savoury bakes. French patisserie classes also run from time to time, so whether you want a pastry class in Bristol or a French cooking class in Bristol, both are here.

On the pastry side, shortcrust is crumbly, puff is layered with butter, and good pastry depends on keeping the butter cold. The Perfect Pastry class covers shortcrust, puff, and sweet and savoury bakes.

Who it's for

Beginners through to confident home cooks. No experience is needed, and you are cooking from the start. Adult classes are for ages 16 and over, and the class is hands-on rather than a demonstration.

As a date night it is simple: cook together, eat together, bring your own bottle. It works just as well as an evening with friends. The class can be bought through gift vouchers, or arranged as a private group booking or corporate event for a hen do, birthday or team day.

Cooking It has been teaching for about ten years, and the format is the same one used for every adult class here: a small group, ingredients and equipment provided, and a shared meal at the end. Dietary requirements are accommodated where possible if you tell us when you book.
